Every year on the first Saturday in December, the Mathematical Association of America holds a mathematical competition known popularly under the name "The Putnam Exam" (its full name is the "William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition").
The competition is open to all regularly enrolled undergraduates in colleges and universities in the United States and Canada, who have not yet received a college degree.
While the problems on the exam range across the entire spectrum of undergraduate mathematics, a great portion of the problems can be solved with elementary mathematics (at a calculus level) allowing sophomores (and even freshmen) to successfully participate.
If you are interested in participating, please contact Mary Young at: my@math.columbia.edu
The registration deadline is October 13.
