Confused about what major to choose? Torn between two different areas? How do I make a decision that I can be confident about? What if my choice conflicts with what my parents want?

To declare your academic program:

1. Go to the Major Declaration webpage:
http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/csa/cc_majordec/index.php
2. Carefully read the information provided.
3. Click the “Declare Major” button at the top of the page and follow the instructions.

The Major Declaration webpage will be available from February 25 to March 6. You may access the major declaration webpage only once. Any subsequent changes you wish to make after declaring online must be made in person at one of the Centers for Student Advising. Once you have completed your selections, you will receive an email with information about departmental advising. As a newly declared major you are expected to outreach to your new faculty adviser before choosing fall courses in April.

Very Important: To declare a program in one of the following disciplines, you must declare online and receive written approval from the department.

  • Architecture (310 Barnard Hall)
  • Comparative Literature & Society (Heyman Center)
  • Creative Writing (612 Lewisohn)
  • Earth & Environmental Sciences (556-7 Schermerhorn)
  • East Asian Languages & Cultures (407 Kent)
  • Film Studies (513 Dodge)
  • Italian (502 Hamilton)
  • Physics (702 Pupin)
  • Spanish & Portuguese (307 Casa Hispanica)
  • Special Concentration in Sustainable Development (Earth Institute Office, 1408 IAB)
  • Urban Studies (208 Hamilton)

To receive written approval from these departments, you must: (1) download and complete a Major/Concentration Declaration Signature Form ; (2) meet with a faculty adviser in the department to obtain a signature of approval; and (3) bring the signed form to the Center for Student Advising in 403 Lerner by March 6.

If you declare a program in one of these departments but have not submitted written approval by March 6, the major or concentration will be removed from your program of study.
